Expressing his amazement and displeasure at what happened to Debussy's letter--it found its way into a large American newspaper where, like all the other [letters], it remains unread--, saying that he regrets he could not accept the invitation of the Concerts Lamoureux, expressing "tutta la mia ammirazione per la vostra arte squisita," saying that unfortunately Debussy will be in Milan only in April and that Pelléas et Mélisande will already have been given without Debussy's having heard it, noting that Debussy has here and there made some small changes in the score and expressing the hope that he will come to Milan because there may be other small alterations necessary when he hears it in a large hall like La Scala, etc.; in the telegram he congratulates Debussy on his heroic victory with Pelléas, despite a scandal provoked by some ignorant, rude, and hostile subscribers: the opera ended "con trionfo per voi e la vostra arte incomparabile."

Claude Debussy (b. 22 August 1862–d. 25 March 1918) was one of the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
